Album Review

Will Downing gives us a lesson on how to be silky smooth with the release of "After Tonight.” During the course of recording the album Downing was struck by Polymyosititis, a physical disorder that causes weakness in joints and muscles from the neck on down to the limbs. This forced him to record the majority of the vocals from a wheelchair.

The album produced by bandmate Rex Rideout and Noel Goring, contains a solid collection of soul/jazz tunes fit for various musical formats. "Fantasy (Spending Time With You)", an infectious, tight-groove jazz tune is downright sexy with Downing's electric vocal range complimented by Dwayne "Smitty" Smith's bouncy bass line and Rideout's out-of-space sound on keyboards.

"Lover's Melody", an uptempo gem featuring vibes master Roy Ayers who cuts loose on three separate solo breaks paired with excellent backing and harmony vocals by Lauren Evans. "After Tonight" hits the spot perfectly for contemporary jazz fans who from time to time get in the mood for romantic vocal arrangements combined with the usual creative compositions and improvisations.
