Trumpeter Pharez Whitted is following in the footsteps of some the greatest musicians to ever play the instrument beginning with the iconic Miles Davis and working on down to Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd & Freddie Hubbard. Although he takes some musical concepts and improvisations, Pharez Whitted gives us a fresh, authentic, progressive sound thanks to producer George Duke who left his fingerprints on 'Mysterious Cargo.' The title cut features an up to date groove with Whitted doubling up on trumpet and flugelhorn augmented by Kenny Banks striking piano solo performance.
The daring arrangement 'Grapevyne' showed that Pharez Whitted did not shy away from this 1990's R & B classic. By massaging the tune with a tightly composed trumpet medley paired with sultry, jazzy background vocals. 'A Different Kind Of Love Song," is a throwback from George Duke's "Follow The Rainbow" days. Arranged, written & produced, the late keyboardist gave this song plenty of star appeal with Kirk Whalum on saxophone and Paul Jackson on guitar.
'Mysterious Cargo" is a nice jazz album loaded with creativity, potency energy and style and showed a unique mixture of modern and mainstream jazz that gradually grows on the average fan of the genre.
