Album Review

Norman Connors’ album is what the title says it is. "Star Power is "Star"-studded with jazz vets, R & B artists along with up and coming vocalists. Norman Connors takes the blueprint from his classic album "You Are My Starship" as he adopted a more up-to-date, progressive sound with a familiar blend of hip instrumentals and silky smooth vocals.

The fluid "Stormin Norman" an 80's throwback jazz tune features underrated piano player/keyboardist Herman Jackson who has composed some of Norman Brown's (guitar) early albums. Sade's "Sweetest Taboo" is covered nicely by Connors with new vocalist Antoinette handling the lead role accompanied by Bobby Lyle on piano who always manages to get the audience's attention with his lively improvisational masterpieces.

If nothing else, "Star Power" will make you dust off some of Norman Connors old records of the 70's but once again the jazz drummer shows the propensity for wheeling in some of the best musicians on the planet when it comes to keeping his sound fresh.

Listen to Jazzy 88.9 WCSU Wednesday, February 10 for songs from the album "Star Power."
