Album Review

“Sun Goddess” was Ramsey Lewis coming out party as he transformed his finger-snapping bebop traditional style from "The In Crowd" sound into a jazz-fusion funkateer attack with creative riffs on electric piano and synthesizer. The title cut, an 8 minute, 31 second masterpiece is littered with Earth Wind & Fire's brazen trademark sound from the silky smooth background vocals, Verdine White's grooving baseline to Don Myrick's jazzy sax solo.

“Hot Dawgit,” the follow up single enjoyed some success on the Soul Charts that clearly illustrated that Ramsey Lewis was drawing in the younger funk and R & B generation. “Sun Goddess,” was the template for other albums to follow such as “Salongo,” “Tequila Mockingbird” and “Keys To the City.” However, the sudden burst of success wasn't a permanent move on Ramsey's part as he continued to embrace his musical roots filled with traditional concepts loaded with creativity, improvisation & composition.
