Album Review

“A Song Without Words” is the debut solo album for Wayne Linsey, former member of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. Linsey didn't disappoint with a fresh, crisp sound that is contagious to contemporary jazz fans.

It doesn't hurt to have the musical director title on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno for several years with his delightful piano medleys leading into commercial breaks. On the cut "Sidekickin," Linsey unleashes an assortment of skills playing all the instruments including a breathtaking piano improv that captivates an audience in dominating fashion, capped off with an equally effective guitar solo. "Tribute To Ahmad," dedicated to piano great Ahmad Jamal is a soulful mid-tempo tune with nice vocal hooks. Linsey breaks into a soothing, animated solo that is engaging and inspiring filled with pure piano trickery. With a list of big name credits such as the great Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Nancy Wilson and Stanley Clarke its not surprising that "A Song Without Words" was a breakthrough for Wayne Linsey who successfully pulled in a larger group of mainstream and contemporary jazz enthusiasts.
